🧭 Tampere Hacklab – Member’s Guide

FIXME This page is now being updated from Finnish original; translation and merging completed. (Remove this note once the translation has been fully reviewed.)

This page containeth guides & rules, and answers to common questions and problems. Every new member should read this carefully. There are many guidelines, yet they exist for the sake of safety, comfort, and general cleanliness of all.

⚠️ The Hacklab’s halls contain many devices which, when misused, may prove deadly. 🚨

👉 For the safety of all, independent users of the premises must be at least 18 years of age and properly instructed in the use of all machines. If thou knowest not – ask! 🤗

Rights and Obligations of Members

Detailed membership options can be found on the Membership page.

A member of the Association must pay the membership fee when joining, and again annually. The space access fee already includeth said membership fee.

Unlimited use of the workshop requireth a space usage fee, paid every month. Fee must be paid whether or not the member is actually using the Lab; it is payment for the possibility of use, not for the actual usage. Please do not use the “Custom Invoice” option displayed on your membership page – it is intended for sponsors only.

As a member, thou art responsible for following the Lab's announcements. All are encouraged to join the Hacklab’s mailing list here . Important notices regarding Lab usage, trainings, and other affairs are sent there. Check thine spam folder regularly.

Activities of minors are conducted under guidance, and large machinery may be used only under supervision.

The Hacklab hath no paid staff. Each member is obliged to maintain the community’s premises.

Clean up after thyself, at the least.

Empty trash bins.

Improve facilities.

Report broken things.

Failure to meet these obligations or violation of the association’s rules is grounds for temporary or permanent removal of space access, or expulsion from the association.

Behaviour at the Lab

Religion and politics are forbidden topics at Hacklab. Advertising or discussion related thereto should be avoided. Projects connected with religion or politics (posters, artifacts, etc.) are likewise forbidden, save for historical context such as miniatures or theatrical costumes.

Tampere Hacklab is a substance-free space. Be not intoxicated in the Lab. Electrical and pneumatic tools have an absolute zero-permille limit. Smoking indoors is prohibited; the smoking place is outside by the door. For those seeking mild merriment, the Restaurant Wanha Tappi lies conveniently a block away.

Hacklab may be visited with a well-behaved dog. The owner must watch over the animal at all times, and remove it should it disturb others.

Disturb not the hacking of others. Conduct thyself with respect. 🐕‍🦺

Use of Doors / Entry

If thou hast paid the access fee and it appeareth in the member register, thou mayest enter by calling the door number +358452692991, which openeth the door for about a minute. The call is not answered and is free of charge.

The door may also be opened by an NFC card.

More information on doors may be found at Use of Doors.

Community Meetings

The first Tuesday of each month at 19:00 there is a community meeting held in the Lab, oft with remote participation possible. The link may be found in chat room headers and on the meeting agenda. Those wishing to influence Hacklab’s operations or acquisitions are encouraged to attend. The meeting is open to all and an excellent chance to meet fellow members.

Agenda may be examined here , and new items may be added here before the meeting commences.

It is recommended that new members attend at least one meeting to introduce themselves. During the formal meeting, no noisy work may be done in the Lab. Meetings last typically 30–60 minutes.

Organising Events for Outsiders

📈 Hacklab’s lounge and other rooms may be used to host events.

🕕 Do not hold events on Tuesdays or Thursdays, as the Lab is heavily used then.

👀 The organiser must supervise all outsiders.

📅 Announce the event early and mention it in a community meeting. If the schedule be urgent, request permission at hallitus@tampere.hacklab.fi .

✅ Past events include first-aid courses and technical meetups.

Communication

The Lab chiefly useth two instant-message channels: one for general chatter, and one for practical matters. Instructions for joining are at here.

All members are encouraged to join the mailing list.

Discourse is the common forum maintained by Hacklab Finland ry.

Storing Belongings in Hackerspace

Hacklab is not a rental warehouse; store only projects thou art actively working on.

Members paying the monthly fee may keep one plastic box in storage. The box shall be marked with the member’s name and contact. The standard is SmartStore Classic 15, available in many markets.

More information at Storage of goods in the Lab.

Purchases and Supplies

Consumables are replenished by the potluck principle – if thou usest something, bring equivalent materials in return.

Some essentials (soft drinks, trash bags, toilet paper) are bought for the community and compensated as expense reimbursements.

Larger purchases (machines, tools) are decided in meetings.

Funding:

Ordinary supplies from membership fees and sales.

Larger projects via crowdfunding or donations.

Hacklab Shop

Information about Hacklab’s second-hand shop may be found here.

Arno’s Office

Next to the electronics section lieth Arno’s office. Seek his counsel if thou needest aid with materials or machinery.

Tools

Hackerspace containeth tools owned by the Lab and by members. (See Workspace and Tools pages.)

All hand tools are free for members to use, provided the user knoweth how not to destroy them. If thou knowest not, ask. After use, return each tool to its place.

Machines require paid access and proper training. Large machines may only be used by trained individuals.

Borrowing

Members with access rights may borrow tools for short durations. Record the loan in the blue Borrowing/Breakage Book in the lobby (name, date, item, return time). For longer loans, notify the board by e-mail.

Noise

The Lab is meant for making, thus noise is permitted. Exception: During scheduled trainings or meetings, refrain from loud work near the lounge. Quiet work (electronics etc.) is fine. The instructor may demand that disturbing work be stopped.

Safety

Always follow principles of safe working. Avoid unnecessary risk; assess hazards before beginning. Learn the location of first-aid kits and extinguishers. Wear appropriate protective gear. Study the rescue plan and keep escape routes clear. Keep your area tidy and clean after yourself.

Fire

The Lab possesseth CO₂ and powder extinguishers and fire blankets. Familiarise thyself with their locations, especially when welding or using hot tools. Use CO₂ extinguishers first; powder ones make terrible mess. Windows may serve as emergency exits via ladders outside. Charging lithium batteries must always be supervised. Leaving batteries charging unattended is forbidden!

Dangerous Materials

The following are absolutely forbidden:

Ammunition and explosives. Servicing firearms is allowed, but leave ammunition home.

Handheld lasers of unlawful power. Industrial lasers enclosed within machines are permitted.

Radioactive or highly toxic substances. Treat all unlabelled chemicals as dangerous.

Report any prohibited items to the owner, board, or authorities depending on gravity.

Overnight Stay

Sleeping in the Lab is prohibited. The building lacketh facilities for such. Nearby hotel Lillan https://www.lillan.fi/ or local AirBnBs provide lodging.

Leaving the Lab

If thou art last to depart any workshop (wood, metal, electronics, paint room, etc.), ensure all power and lights are off. The last hacker should check:

Lights off in metal and wood areas

Compressor and plasma booth off

“Present/Away” switch to Away

All exterior doors locked

When uncertain, ask on the chat channel.

Present / Away Switch

Inside the inner door there is a Present/Away switch. When leaving last, set it to Away. This de-energizes sockets and preventeth fire hazards.

Commercial Activity

Small-scale commercial work (e.g., producing goods for sale) is permitted if it doth not disturb others. Inform the board beforehand. Compensation to the community may be monetary, in goods, or via workshops.

Materials used in such work must be paid for, and CNC machine time may incur separate fees.

As example, simple electronics work for a company hath been billed at 10 €/hour. The worker must be a member.

Prefer to perform such tasks at quieter times; long 3D prints at night are discouraged if others await use.

Parking

Cars may be parked in the yard’s free spots, save those marked reserved. Street parking existeth nearby. Loading bays may be blocked only in the evening. Keep the leftmost bay free always.

Bicycles may be parked near stairs or in the lobby if not obstructing passage.

Long-term vehicle storage in the yard or indoors is forbidden. The yard is managed by the property company; the Lab is not liable if thy car be towed.

Membership Termination

To end space access, thou mayest disable it via the member register under My Settings → Space Access → Disable.

To end membership entirely, e-mail the board requesting resignation. Outstanding access fees must be paid up to the leaving date. Unpaid memberships are eventually removed automatically, but written notice is preferred for record.

Note: When membership endeth, access to all services (Matrix, NextCloud, Wiki, etc.) ceaseth. Transfer any needed data before leaving; recovery afterwards is impossible.
